DTF Printing FAQ — Direct-to-Film Printing Questions Answered

DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing is a newer decoration method that has changed what’s possible for custom apparel. It handles full color, small quantities, and complex artwork without screen setup costs. Here’s what you need to know.

Main Street Shirt Company produces DTF printing in-house in Illinois using commercial-grade DTF production equipment.

What Is DTF Printing?

What does DTF stand for?

DTF stands for Direct-to-Film. The process works by printing a design onto a specialized film using a DTF printer, applying a hot-melt adhesive powder, curing the powder with heat, and then heat-pressing the finished transfer onto the garment. The result is a full-color print that adheres directly to the fabric.

How is DTF different from a regular heat transfer?

Traditional heat transfers (such as inkjet-printed transfers or plastisol transfers) are printed on paper or vinyl and then applied with heat. DTF uses a specialized film and adhesive powder system that creates a transfer with a slightly different feel and durability profile. Commercial DTF transfers are generally more durable and vibrant than basic consumer-grade heat transfers. They are a production-grade method, not a craft-store iron-on.

Is DTF the same as sublimation?

No. Sublimation printing converts dye into gas that bonds with polyester fibers, producing a print that is part of the fabric itself. Sublimation only works on white or light-colored 100% polyester. DTF printing, by contrast, works on virtually any fabric color or type — cotton, polyester, blends, canvas, and more. DTF and sublimation serve different applications.

What Can Be Printed with DTF?

Can DTF print on dark shirts?

Yes. Unlike some other transfer methods, DTF prints on any garment color — black, navy, red, or any other color. The white layer is part of the print itself, so there is no separate underbase step required.

Can DTF print on polyester and athletic fabrics?

Yes. This is one of DTF’s strongest advantages. DTF adheres to polyester, nylon, spandex blends, and performance fabrics without dye migration issues. Screen printing on high-polyester fabrics risks dye bleed, which can affect color accuracy. DTF does not have this problem.

Can DTF print on hoodies, hats, and bags?

DTF works on most flat and slightly curved soft goods: t-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, tote bags, and some soft-structured items. It does not work well on structured caps (the curved rigid bill prevents proper heat press contact) or on textured surfaces where adhesion is inconsistent. For caps, embroidery is typically the better method.

What colors can DTF print?

DTF can print unlimited colors, including full-color photographs, gradients, and fine detail at no additional cost per color. This is a major difference from screen printing, where each color adds to the setup cost.

Minimums and Quantities

What is the minimum order for DTF printing?

There is no minimum quantity for DTF printing. You can order a single shirt. This makes DTF ideal for one-offs, individual name/number personalization, samples, and orders where people are each getting a different design.

Is DTF good for large orders?

DTF is efficient for small to medium quantities and for orders with high color complexity. For large orders of 50 or more pieces using a simple 1–4 color design, screen printing will typically be more cost-effective. The right choice depends on your specific artwork and quantity — ask us which method makes sense for your project.

Can I get individual names printed with DTF?

Yes. Because each DTF transfer is printed individually (not on a shared screen), every shirt in a run can have a unique name, number, or personalization at no additional per-name setup cost. This makes DTF the preferred method for sports rosters, personalized event shirts, and fundraiser apparel where each piece differs.

Quality and Durability

How durable is DTF printing?

When properly applied and cared for, DTF printing is a durable decoration method. It adheres firmly to the fabric and resists peeling and cracking under normal wear and washing. The durability is comparable to quality heat transfers and suitable for most apparel applications including school spirit wear, team shirts, and event apparel.

Does DTF have a heavy plastic feel?

DTF prints do have a slight hand feel compared to the fabric itself, but quality DTF production on appropriate fabrics produces a thinner, more flexible result than older vinyl-style transfers. The feel is generally less noticeable on lighter-weight shirt materials. It is not the same thick, stiff feel of older plastisol transfers.

Will DTF crack over time?

Well-produced DTF printing is resistant to cracking. As with any heat-applied decoration, following proper care instructions (wash inside out, low heat tumble dry) extends the life of the print.

How does DTF compare to screen printing in durability?

Screen printing with plastisol ink is generally considered the gold standard for long-term print durability, particularly for high-use items like workwear or athletic uniforms. DTF is highly durable for most everyday apparel applications. For spirit wear, event shirts, and casual apparel, both methods perform well. See our full comparison: DTF vs. Screen Printing.

Artwork and Files

What file type do I need for DTF printing?

High-resolution PNG files with a transparent background are ideal for DTF. The file should be 300 DPI or higher at actual print size. Vector files (AI, EPS, SVG) can also be prepared for DTF production. Low-resolution images from websites or social media are not suitable.

Does DTF work with full-color photos?

Yes. DTF handles photographic full-color artwork without color limitations. This is ideal for realistic prints, detailed illustrations, gradient designs, and anything with more than 6 colors.

DTF Gang Sheets

What is a DTF gang sheet?

A gang sheet is a large sheet of DTF film that contains multiple individual designs or transfers. Instead of printing each design separately, multiple designs are arranged on a single sheet to minimize waste and reduce cost. Main Street Shirt Company offers a Build-Your-Own gang sheet tool where you can arrange your designs on a 23-inch wide sheet in lengths from 12 inches up to 60 inches.

Who uses gang sheets?

Gang sheets are used by decorators, small businesses, boutiques, and crafters who want to stock DTF transfers to apply themselves. They are also used by customers who need multiple different designs at once without the cost of individual transfer pricing.

Pricing

How is DTF pricing calculated?

DTF pricing is based primarily on the size (print area) of the transfer and the quantity. Unlike screen printing, color count does not affect DTF pricing. A 4-inch circle print costs the same whether it has 1 color or 20 colors. Contact us at info@mainstreetshirtcompany.com for pricing on your specific project.
